Two men, aged 23 and 25, have been arrested in Derry following last night’s fatal car crash in which a 27-year-old female police officer was killed.

Constable Phillipa Reynolds was a rear seat passenger in an unmarked police car which was travelling through a green light at the junction at Dales Corner at 3.30am when it collided with a stolen landcruiser jeep which had travelled through a red light at the same junction,

Speaking at a press conference at Strand Road police station on Saturday afternoon, Superintendent Stephen Cargin, G District Commander, said Const. Reynolds and her colleagues were not in pursuit of the stolen vehicle and were on a routine patrol when the collision occurred. He said they would not have known at that point that the vehicle had been stolen.

He said the jeep is thought to have been stolen from the Gobnascale area around 3am.

In an emotional address to local and national media, the local commander described Const. Reynolds as “beautiful, friendly and bubbly” adding that she was one of the most enthusiastic young officers he had come across. He said her PSNI colleagues in Foyle were devastated and traumatised in the wake of what had happened.
