Ballykelly Communion token sells for £56 on eBay

An 18th century Communion token from Ballykelly has sold for £56 in an internet sale.

Described as “an original 18th century Irish Communion token for Ballykelly in County Derry”, the item was up for sale on eBay.

“It is in very good, clean condition,” stated the seller, located in Raphoe, Co. Donegal.

Four bidders put in eight bids for the small grey token with the letters B and K inscribed on it. The bidding started off at 12 and included further bids of 35 and 55.

Several internet sites state Communion tokens were used extensively in the Presbyterian Church in Scotland from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

“They were simply a metal 'ticket' which allowed the holder to partake of communion, not only in the Established Church but also other Presbyterian forms,” said one site.
