Banger attack in Cornshell Fields Fireworks misuse 'putting lives at risk'
A Cornshell Fields resident has warned that children misusing fireworks are putting people at risk of death or serious injury.
The woman, who contacted ‘FN’ yesterday, did not want to be identified for fear of provoking further attacks on her home.
She revealed that a firework-type device had destroyed her letterbox in an attack on Tuesday night
“I live in a flat with my three-year-old daughter and had left to go to college. My wee girl wasn’t in the house because she was being looked after by her father. A friend of mine went into my flat yesterday evening and the first thing she noticed was a funny smell. Some type of firework or banger had been put through the letterbox and it blew it apart completely.
“My friend has a key because she stays with me sometimes when I’m scared to be on my own because my house has been targeted by teenagers here before. I’ve only lived here since February but my fence has been set on fire three times, my oil tank has been damaged twice and teenagers are outside my house drinking and making a nuisance of themselves.
“I’m worried that someone could get badly injured or worse, because Hallowe’en is coming up and there’s only going to be more of these bangers and fireworks being thrown about by young ones. Parents need to know what their children are up to and keep a tighter rein on them before someone gets hurt.”
A PSNI spokeswoman said police were aware of the incident.
“We would discourage children from misusing fireworks of any kind and remind the public that a suitable licence is required for rockets and other large fireworks. The practice of pushing any type of firework through someone’s letterbox is extremely dangerous and we would ask parents to reinforce the safety message to their children as Hallowe’en approaches.”
