St. John’s Primary School in Dernaflaw is celebrating new wall art thanks to a talented student.
P7 pupil, Bella Brolly was chosen as the overall winner in a poster safety competition for Key Stage 2 pupils organised by Limavady Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
P5, P6 and P7 students from 16 Roe Valley primary schools designed posters based on a safety video they played about the dangers of alcohol.
In all, 500 entries were submitted, with each student recognised for their effort with a certificate.
The entries were whittled down to 12 for inclusion in the ‘Keep Safe 2” calendar, of which 1,500 copies have to been distributed to schools. Bella’s colourful entry also scooped the ‘overall winner’ accolade.

Based around a street scene, where young people congregate, and in Bella’s case she chose Dungiven Main Street in her home town, her Poster depicts anti littering and underage drinking messages. Her winning entry now adorns a school wall for all to enjoy.
Students also submitted a strapline, and Bella’s was ‘Think about what you do and say, Keep Safe 2-day’.
The modest student says it feels “cool” to have her work published.
“I feel really proud. It’s a bit werid too, but cool. My parents couldn’t believe it,” said Bella, who revealed her talent won the school an iPad, while she received an iPod.
School mates, Paula McGill and Caitlin Rose Cassidy also have their entries published in the calendar.
“It feels really good to see my entry in the calendar,” said Paula, aged 10, while Caitlin Rose (9) added: “I am really proud of it. It’s one of the best drawings I have ever done. My family were delighted.”
School principal, Hilary McCloskey is proud to have pupils as published artists. He said the participation in the PCSP project helps the school and students.
PCSP vice chairperson, Sam McGregor said the standard of entries was high, giving the panel a tough job and commended all the schools for participating.
