Big Apple success for Derry lads: 'It's definitely every musician's dream'
The Celtic Thunder phenomenon currently sweeping the United States saw two North West musicians sing for the Mayor of New York over breakfast before opening 5th Avenue's massive St. Patrick's Day Parade yesterday.
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ from New York, musician Keith Harkin said he was “really looking forward” to performing for the Mayor and opening the St. Patrick’s ceremonies.
“As well as singing for the Mayor and opening the parade, we’re going on The Today Show too, one of the biggest show’s in America,” he said.
CD and DVD sales of Celtic Thunder have just soared to No.1 on the Amazon Top Sellers list too: “It’s unreal, the response had been amazing so far. The CD and DVD are No.1 on Amazon solely through Internet sales and bookings and it hasn’t even hit the shelves yet!” Keith said.
“It’s every musician’s dream to be in this position and it shows that all this hard work has been worth it. The show’s producers are delighted too, they can’t believe the feedback from the show.”
21-year-old Keith was chosen to be a Celtic man in the hit show, alongside fellow Derry performer, 15-year-old Damien McGinty. The show was conceived by Phil Coulter and Sharon Browne following the success of Browne’s previous show, Celtic Woman.
“The songs from the show are getting 13,000 plays a day on our MySpace site too,” Keith went on, “And the show is being aired on TVS, the public broadcasting station, and apparently public demand for our show is the second highest ever in the history of the station!”
With a nationwide tour is set to begin in the US this September, Keith revealed that producers are already planning the 2009 tour. With this coast to coast phenomenon set to get even bigger, Keith says he intends to enjoy every minute of it.
“I’m making the most of everything and loving it,” he said. “My head’s in the clouds!”
