A security alert is continuing along Derry quay behind the City Council offices following the discovery of two ‘viable devices’ there.

Army technical officers are working at the scene, as well as PSNI forensics. Part of the walkway along the Foyle Embankment is closed.

The alarm was raised at around 11pm last night after a volunteer from Foyle Search and Rescue opened a holdall lying behind the Council offices and saw what was described as a metal pipe inside. Police discovered found in the area later. Ten houses were evacuated and it’s understood some other local residents were told to stay away from the back of their houses during the alert. Part of Strand Road was closed to traffic but re-opened earlier this morning.

Employees at the City Council offices have been told not to report for work there today. Other businesses in the area have also been affected, including a dental surgery.
