Bomb experts examining hijacked car used in post office robbery

British Army bomb experts are dealing with a hijacked car used in an armed robbery of a Derry post office.

A PSNI spokeswoman says police are investigating the hijacking of a silver coloured VW Passat around 10:15am this morning (Mon 9 July) and the subsequent armed robbery of a local post office in the Culmore road area.

“Two males hijacked the vehicle in the Sandbank Cottages area of Shantallow and then drove to the Post office,” she says.

“They threatened staff and robbed the safe of a sum of money. The vehicle has been abandoned on the Coney Road and police and Army Technical Officers will exam it shortly. The Cooney Road will be closed for the next few hours.”

There are no further details at present.
