Bookies ransacked in failed armed robbery

A man has ransacked a bookmaker’s shop in Derry during a failed armed robbery.

Police say the man, who was carrying a baton, entered the bookies in Blucher Street shortly after 5:40pm last night (August 15), and demanded money from a member of staff.

“The man smashed a number of television screens in the premises before making off empty handed. No-one was injured during the incident. The man is described as being approximately 5’8” tall and wearing a black jacket and blue jeans,” a PSNI spokeswoman says.

Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly condemned the attempted robbery.

“This must have been a very frightening experience for the member of staff, particularly as it’s reported the robber was armed with a baton.

“We had a spate of robberies in the area at the start of the year so I would call on all local businesses to put in place whatever additional security measures they can.

“I would appeal for anyone with information on this attempted robbery to bring it forward straight away “
