Border fears over sex offenders
Fears are growing that sex offenders forced out of Derry are setting up home in border villages such as Muff.
A concerned mother, speaking on behalf of other parents in the village, contacted the ‘Journal’ yesterday to say there’s an “increasing sense of concern” that people with criminal records for sex offences against children in the North could be living freely in border areas.
“When you hear talk of people with such records setting up home across the border because they have been put out of Derry you do get concerned,” she said.
“I have young children and I’m very worried about the stories of offenders, or people suspected of such offences, being around here. I know other parents here feel the same way. Our first priority has to be to keep our children safe.”
The woman said there should be some warning system in place so that parents in communities such as hers are warned when convicted sex offenders move into the area.
A spokesperson for the Garda Siochana confirmed that Gardai are in constant contact with PSNI and discuss issues such as this with them.
Padraig MacLochlainn, Buncrana town councillor and Donegal County Council's deputy mayor, has called for an island-wide sex offenders’ register, which would make the monitoring of sex offenders easier.
“An All-Ireland sex offenders’ register would mean that anybody who is included and is in any part of the island of Ireland can be accountable to relevant parties. It would make things a lot easier."
