Bridie wins Pensioner of the Year 2007

Age Concern Derry hosted its annual Pensioner of the Year awards recently at a gala presentation evening in Malvern House, Chapel Road, with the coveted award being presented to Derry woman, Bridget McColgan.

This prestigious event, now in its twentieth year, recognises the valuable contribution that many older people make to their communities. Once again the 2007 award was a resounding success with a large number of nominations received from right across the Derry City Council area.

This year’s award was very generously sponsored by BT and the Hotel Westport who provided excellent prizes.

Ever popular comedian Gene Fitzpatrick had the big attendance of nominees, their nominators, supporters and guests in raptures with his stand up humour and singing. Musical entertainment was provided by the very talented Paul Breslin. Those present also enjoyed a delicious supper provided by the Age Concern catering staff and volunteers.

The President of Age Concern Derry, Albert Smallwoods presented special awards to Mary Sharkey, George McCready and Bertie Roulstone, who had been highly recommended by the independent panel who had scrutinised the nominations. Albert and Secretary Roger O’Doherty then presented the Cup to the winner and the 2007 Age Concern Derry Pensioner of the Year, Bridget McColgan.
