Brooke Park arson attack widely condemned

Politicians have condemned an arson attack that caused damage estimated at around £200,000 at Derry’s Brooke Park.

At around 3:20am on Saturday a bulldozer being used to carry out development work at Brooke Park was set alight and extensively damaged.

The machinery is being used as part of the regeneration plans for the park.

Sinn Fein MLA Maeve McLaughlin described the arson attack as “ridiculous.”

”I condemn outright those behind this vandalism attack on machinery which is being used for a major refurbishment and investment project at Brooke Park

“The investment at Brooke Park which includes much needed sport facilities and an upgrade to the entire park including the reinstatement of the pond will bring this famous green space back to life and be the centre of the local community. The new facilities also include a state of the art play park for children which is badly needed in the area.

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan says the attack has left him “outraged.”

He says it is the local community who will suffer as a result.

“This is a project that we have worked hard to drive forward and will greatly enhance the Rosemount area and benefit the city as a whole.

“It seems to me that this was a deliberate, planned attack as opposed to an act of wanton vandalism. However the net result is the same; the work will probably now be delayed, site workers have been sent home as they are unable to continue carrying out their duties, a very expensive piece of equipment has been destroyed and this community is suffering.”

Police have asked anyone with information to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
