Bullied for being a "bert"

A heartbroken Derry mother last night told the 'Journal' that a gang of youths who came to Carnhill at the weekend brandishing baseball bats and iron bars said they were after her son because he was a "bert."

Monica Bradley from Carnhill said her son is now a prisoner in his own home, afraid to go out in case he is attacked.

Last weekend a group of almost 40 youths visited Carnhill on two separate nights terrifying local residents.

"They told people they were going to kill my son and dance on his head until he bled to death," she said.

Ms. Bradley revealed that on Saturday night a gang of up to 20 youths stood in her garden shouting abuse at her daughter.

One of them stuck his fist through the glass door.

Ms. Bradley also revealed that just three weeks ago her son was jumped by a gang outside a local shop.

"They came with bats, iron bars and planks of wood they pulled off a neighbour's fence," she said. "Some of planks had nails in them."My older son then chased them away.

"On Sunday night a 12 years-old girl was attacked and her father had his car window put in."

The Derry mother of seven said she can't send her son back to school because she's been told he'll "be got in the toilets."

"The school have been trying to help," she said, "but there's not a lot they can do. I can't send him back there.

"We're trying to get him some home tutoring."He can't go out at the minute, anywhere he does go he has to get a taxi."

She called on parents in Derry to know where their children are at all times.

"This happened at 11pm.," she said. "My kids aren't allowed out at that time, these kids shouldn't be out either. This has to stop.

"But they won't intimidate me. I won't be forced out of my house."

Ms. Bradley said she would be contacting CRJ ahead of the weekend.

Meanwhile police in Derry revealed that they removed an iron bar from Carnhill on Saturday night. It has been sent for examination.
