Buncrana school vid goes viral
Buncrana’s Scoil Mhuire was agog yesterday with the news that its You Tube video has gone ‘viral’ on the net with more than 22,000 hits across 56 countries in just two days.
Teacher Katrina McGonagle, who co-ordinated the ‘lip-dub’ of both teachers and students singing along to the Undertones’ hit, Teenage Kicks, said she was absolutely amazed at the response to their school video.
She told the ‘Journal’yesterday: “There is a massive buzz here today. We never, ever expected a response like this. What’s happened has even got mentioned in the national media. It really is exciting for us all - not just the students!”
Ms. McGonagle explained the background: “Emile Rainey, who is the son of our Principal, Liam, has his own video and photographic company and he suggested we do a video to showcase the school and its talented kids. He did this on Monday and by Friday we had it done and dusted.
“It’s only been on the net for two days but already it’s a massive hit. It’s taken on a life of its own. On Sunday we were on the trending list on U Tube in that we were in the top 5 most viewed items right across the world.
“It really has been great for the school. Everyone here is floating on air today.”
Needless to say school principal, Mr. Rainey, was delighted with the response.
He commented: “In the midst of all the negativity in the county in recent times this really was something very positive. What it does is show the school in its true light.
“We have great kids here, students who want to learn and get on life. Some times the headlines are all about what’s wrong with kids but this shows them making a positive contribution, being positive and having a good time doing it.
“The staff and the pupils have a great relationship and the former joined in and played their part to the full. All I can say is that’s a credit to all concerned.”
The idea of the ‘lip dub’ emanated in America when a cameraman literally ran through a college filming people ‘singing’ along with a dubbed record. It’s believed Scoil Mhuire is only the second school in the country to have done it.
The response on the web was universally positive.
One contributor commented: “I’ve never watched an 8 minute video here. But there is no way I was turning this off.”
Another remarked: “This is excellent. Really well done....”
