Burt’s lady of letters remembers Maeve Binchy

Burt’s Kathleen Grant has not been resting on her laurels this summer.

In July she organised a charity book sale, which raised 1,574 euro for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and 1,574 euro for the Respiratory Care Unit of Letterkenny General Hospital.

Last week, the Inishowen lady of letters penned a tribute to author Maeve Binchy who died on July 30. The quirky and imaginative piece was printed in the Irish Times letters’ column three days later.

Speaking to the Journal, Ms Grant said: “When I heard about Maeve Binchy’s passing, I was moved to put pen to paper to publicly acknowledge the joy her novels brought me and thousands of others down through the years. The whole thing took me about ten minutes to complete. I was absolutely delighted when I opened the Irish Times on Thursday and there it was.”

For Journal readers here is Kathleen Grant’s letter:“Sir – Saddened to hear about the death of Maeve Binchy. I would ask you all to Light a Penny Candle for the Heart and Soul of any party as we travel on the Lilac Bus, with a Circle of Friends to a Silver Wedding, passing the Copper Birch on Tara Road, Meeting Frankie so he does not go near The Glass Lake, which is near Whitethorn Woods.

“I look well with my Scarlet Feather, as we proceed to Quentin’s Big Night. If you would like to be a writer, go to Evening Class, passing many A Week in Winter, dreaming of a Night of Rain and Stars, following hopefully a Firefly Summer, and as we return by Dublin 4 we will hear Echoes of a wonderful life lived by Maeve Binchy. Rest in peace. Your good work will live on.”
