Call to 'fast track' stadium plans

Former Derry Mayor Helen Quigley has said the Council must 'fast track' plans for a multi-million development at Brandywell Stadium in the light of Derry City's current financial crisis.

Councillor Quigley said the time for talking is over and work should start by the end of the year.

The planned timetable for work at the Brandywell is outlined in a document prepared for a meeting of the Council's Development Committee on Tuesday afternoon. It suggests that work should start in 2011 and be completed in 2012.

It's thought a project costing around 5m is planned.

Speaking to the Sunday Journal yesterday, Colr. Quigley slammed the proposed timeline and said: "It has to be council's priority that work gets underway at the stadium immediately. Whilst I welcome the fact that this item is on the council agenda we've been talking about The Brandywell for a number of years and the time for talking is over. At this stage, we're sick of plans and strategies."

Colr. Quigley continued: "The stadium needs to be looked at as a stand alone item. I would particularly call for that given the circumstances that Derry City Football Club find themselves in currently. Work should start at the turn of the year and that's what I'm calling for. An early conversation needs to take place as soon as possible with the relevant stakeholders. Enough time has been spent on discussion already, it's time for action."

The Council report suggests that the rest of 2009 should be spent on consultation, putting in place an urban planner to draw up a 'master plan' for the area, recruiting a design team and carrying out a health and safety review for the area.

Business planning and funding applications for the stadium and surrounding area have been scheduled for early next year.
