Call to support the Journal Toy Appeal
The 'Derry Journal' Toy Appeal swings into action today - and this year more than ever we need the help of the people of the North West to make it a success.
It’s been ten years since we launched our first appeal, since then the campaign has helped bring Christmas cheer to thousands of families of families locally.
We’re delighted to be joined by the Saint Vincent De Paul, the Salvation Army and the Northern Ireland Fire Service who have been so dedicated during this past decade in making the appeal a success.
Cormac Wilson, Northern Ireland Regional President of Saint Vincent De Paul, said the local appeal had made a great difference to the lives of families of families in the city.
“With the recession the demand is higher this year with the number of families needing help increasing,” he said. “There were a number of local firms who’ve been very supportive in the past but because of the recession we have lost some of that.”
Bernard Feeney, Regional President for the Society, said the number of industries which had closed down has had an impact with families struggling with mortgage payments and hire purchase agreements.
“We’ve had families coming to us for the first time this year,” he said. “We want to say that it’s ok to ask for help.”
Local people have been asked to pick up one extra gift when they are out shopping.
We are keen to put the emphasis on helping children of all ages, especially teenagers who would appreciate a book token or voucher.
You can leave a donation to our Toy Appeal at the Derry Journal Offices - 22 Buncrana Road, Derry, the SVDP Ozanam House in Bridge Street, any of the fire stations in Derry or the Salvation Army building in John Street.
