Call for "permanent solution" to street drinking teenagers
A Derry councillor has called for a 'permanent solution' to street drinkers who party all night keeping residents up until the early hours.
Councillor Maeve McLaughlin made the call to tackle what she called "anti-community issues" in Lowry's Lane and the Glen field areas.
At a meeting held this week, the councillor heard from residents of Glen Road who said they had experienced an upsurge in street drinking with young people partying well into the early hours of the morning near their homes.
Colr McLaughlin said there had been ongoing problems in the areas for more than twenty years and that it was time to permanently resolve them once and for all.
"I have met on several occasions with the residents of the Glen Road, Glenwood and other areas surrounding Lowry's Lane along with Derry City Council officials, the PSNI and Community Safety Partnership and there was unanimous agreement that there has to be a permanent solution to the problem," she said.
She welcomed the erection of no-drinking signs and said she campaigned to have the area labelled a hot-spot for the PSNI Neighbourhood Team.
She said: "Derry City Council has produced a report that offers a set of options to solve the problem including closing Lowry's Lane, opening it up to vehicle traffic or developing a community infrastructure to address the problems. Following a meeting in the Guildhall they have agreed to review the viability of all the options and to report back to residents in the near future."
In the meantime she said at Lowry's Lane the traffic bollards would be replaced by slimmer ones to stop young people using them as table tops for drinks.
"Another issue being examined is blocking off Lowry's field to cars and the possible erection of fencing and gates around the field that will be only open during day time hours," said the councillor.
