Campsie fire probe ongoing

An investigation into the cause of a fire which ripped through a Derry recycling plant was “ongoing” last night.
A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said it was “too early to determine” how the blaze started as the investigation continued.
The blaze which gutted several buildings at the Peak Environmental Recycling Plant on Tuesday and Wednesday, causing substantial damage to property. The fire is being jointly investigated by Fire Service and police teams.
A 200 metre exclusion zone set up around the area was lifted on Wednesday afternoon, more than 26 hours after the outbreak of the fire.
Local residents had been advised to “close windows” to safeguard against the plumes of thick, black smoke, which could be seen for many miles. No one was injured during the emergency.
A team of more than 40 firefighters battled the blaze at its most powerful, after several explosions were heard at the scene on Tuesday at around lunchtime.
A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said several buildings containing “large quantities” of diesel, plastic, cardboard and several gas cylinders were engulfed in the fire.
Five fire appliances and four specialist appliances were at the scene on Tuesday, although the number of fire personnel was reduced as the “deep seated” blaze was brought under control and finally extinguished at teatime on Wednesday.
Fire fighters were once again tasked to the site after reports that it reignited on Thursday morning.
A spokesperson for the NIFRS said the response was to deal with “small pockets of smoke coming from materials” at the site.
She said it was “not unusual as it was a deep seated fire”. She added that Fire Service personnel “dampened down” the material and the matter was dealt with in a little over an hour.
