Cars and houses damaged in Galliagh

Cars and houses were damaged in Galliagh in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The incidents are reported to have happened in the Elaghmore Park, Altcar Park, Leafair Park, Fern Park, Brookdale Court and Bloomfield Park areas.

Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Tony Hassan, described the damage in Galliagh as “ridiculous” and urged residents to remain vigilant.

“It absolutely ridiculous that this is happening,” said colr. Hassan.

“It’s very expensive for people to keep a car on the road at the best of times but in the current economic climate it’s even more difficult. No one needs this extra expense and upset.”

He added: “I also call on everyone in the area to be mindful of their vehicles and other possessions, keep your car keys hidden safely inside your house after locking it up for the night. And any valuables in the car to be locked in the boot.”

Colr. Hassan called on anyone with information pertaining to the incidents in Galliagh to contact the PSNI.

“I urge anyone in the area on Friday night, early hours of Saturday morning who might have any information about these incidents to contact the PSNI,” he said.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police would ask anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in any of these areas or who has any information to contact them at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000.

“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
