An auction with a difference will take place in Derry this weekend.

Viewback Auctions is hosting the unique event at
4 Deanfield - an unrestored period property off Limavady Road in Derry’s Waterside - this Saturday, September
29.

Among the historic items up for auction at the event are a clock from the old Derry Workhouse, military medals from the Boer and Sudan campaigns of the late 19th century, unique material from the 1912 Ulster Convenant period and a rare car badge - complete with eagle and swastika - reputedly from General Erwin Rommel’s staff car.

According to the auctioneers, the Deanfield property - at one time the family home of the Youngs who owned a chemists at Strand Road - is a fine representation of “life in the city for an affluent
section... over the last century.”

A spokesman for Viewback Auctions - based in Omagh - explained that successive occupants of the property “had a long association with Foyle College, the rugby and cricketing fraternity and Magee College.”

He added that Saturday’s sale - which starts at 1pm with viewing at 10am - includes much material of a local interest.

“For example, there are Bartlett engravings of Lough Foyle and Londonderry, books of both Irish and Ulster interest, an Edwardian sideboard made in the city and Victorian and later furnishings.

“Belleek, Derby and Missien are also represented as are Victorian domestic Staffordshire wares in the ceramics section.”

As many of the original features of Edwardian life have also survived such as vintage furs, dresses and linens as well as an authentic roll-top bath with shower.

“The auction promises to be a really interesting event,” said the spokesman for Viewback Auctions. “It must be one of the most interesting sales to take place in the North West for some time.”

Anyone planning to attend the auction - which starts at 1 p.m. - is asked to “park with consideration for the neighbourhood” during both the sale and viewing.
