Celebrity Michelle To Launch Carn’s ‘Men’s Shed’ Project

Award-winning Irish television and radio presenter Michelle Doherty will officially launch the Men’s Shed Carn project next Friday night at 7 p.m.in the Men’s Shed Workshop, Moville Road, Carndonagh. Former model Michelle, who hails from Glengad near Malin, was the first female DJ to win the Best Irish Radio DJ category in the Hot Press Annual Polls.

The Mens Shed Carn project was established in February of this year in an effort to address the dire need that exists for men in the Inishowen area affected by the recession - both financially and psychologically - following the collapse of the construction sector. Inishowen has been particularly badly affected by the recession due to the significant lack of industry and consequent lack of opportunity that exists in the peninsula.

Since the first meeting in February, the project has gone from strength to strength - procuring and renovating premises at the old Co-op, as well as fund-raising activities. The renovations are now nearing completion and there are a host of training opportunities, social activities and projects (e.g. restoration, woodwork, metalwork etc.) planned for the coming months.

Gerard Mc Carron, Treasurer of Mens Shed Carn said: “It’s great that Michelle is taking time out of her hectic schedule to support the Mens Shed Carn project. I would also like to say a big thank you to the Henry Girls and Liam Mc Dermott who will be providing the music afterwards.

“Over the past six months, through various fundraising activities and the generous support of the local community, more than 5000 euro has been raised. As well as supporting renovation works at the Mens Shed Carn premises, these proceeds will be shared with a number of other worthwhile causes, including The Funny Feet Fund Carndonagh and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlim (representatives of both charities will receive cheques for approximately 1700 euro each on the night).

“We would encourage as many people as possible to come along to the launch and support this worthy local project and to the entertainment afterwards upstairs in Tul Na Ri.

Denise Mc Cool from the Inishowen Development Partnership added: “The Men’s Shed is a community project that gives men in Inishowen an opportunity to use the many skills and talents that they have and is really an updated version of the shed in the backyard. If you looked inside one you could see anything from men making garden furniture to maybe restoring an old piece of furniture, or maybe fixing lawn mowers. You might also see both young and older men learning new skills from each other and also learning something about life from the men they are working with. We are delighted with the interest shown in the project so far and hope this initiative will help bring together men of all ages to share their stories, skills and knowledge and make a positive contribution to the local community.”
