Hosting Fleadh Cheoil na h’Éireann next year will be “a life changing opportunity” for Derry, the director general of Comhaltas has said.

Lanbrás Ó Murchú made the comment at a civic reception hosted by the Mayor of Derry, Councillor Kevin Campbell, held in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin on Saturday evening to celebrate Derry’s hosting of the prestigious festival next year.

Hundreds of people attended the event including the president of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Vince Jordan, and representatives from Comhaltas branches from throughout Ireland.

Senator Ó Murchú said; “In everyone’s life an opportunity is presented that can be life changing. I think that is also true of a community. I believe the allocation of Fleadh Cheoil na h’Éireann to Derry next year is once such occasion.

“It was not just a matter of allocating Fleadh Cheoil na h’Éireann to a venue. It was an opportunity to send out a positive message, first of all to ourselves as a people on this island but also to the 70 million people of Irish extraction throughout the world that there is a rebirth taking place in Derry, in the North, and on the whole island.”

The Mayor, Colr. Campbell said he was confident that 2013 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann “will be a momentous occasion for the city.”

Fleadh chairperson, Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh, said; “Derry will host a fantastic Fleadh next year and we want people from across the world to come home next year and make history with us. Time and time again people tell us that they are welcomed like old friends when they come to Derry and we know that is what those who attend Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2013 will experience.”

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, who also attended the reception, said; “I would like to say a huge word of thanks to Labhras O Murchú. We in this city know that this would not have happened without the leadership he has shown and the way in which he convinced people at organisational level that Derry was the place to come and this city will always be very very grateful.”
