Roe Valley teen Laura Maxwell (pictured left) from outside Dungiven is to be honoured by Limavady Borough Council for her achievements in cycling, which the likeable 16-year-old says is her one big passion.
The Limavady Grammar School student has won a host of titles since she started competitive cycling just a few years ago.
“I’m practically out on the road every day,” said the teen, who is a member of the Roe Valley Cycling Club. “I like a good challenge!”
Over the past few months, Laura has accumulated a number of Ulster titles in the 25 and 10 mile time trials. She is the Ulster Junior Cycling Champion in the 25-mile time trial, where she placed third in the women’s category. She also holds the title in the 10-mile trial junior champion. Laura will be honoured for her achievements at the Ulster Cycling Awards shortly, as well as the civic reception which local TUV councillor Boyd Douglas proposed.
“I was over the moon when I heard about the reception. Not everyone gets one of those,” she says, adding thanks to Chris Sharpe who has helped her with training.
Laura says her dream is to cycle in the Olympics and says her idols are Victoria Pendleton and Wendy Wendy Houvenaghel.
“Cycling is my big passion, but it’s a costly one,” she says. “I’m going to keep working hard and hopefully someone will give me a chance!”
