Colrs unite against ‘sickening’ stench
Speaking on the motion at Council on Tuesday, DUP Colr. Robinson said such a site would be a stain on the town, and would do nothing to attracts jobs.
“Council must play its role to make sure it’s not allowed,” he said, explaining concerns over pollution, the fact it was within an area of outstanding natural beauty, and risks to health.
“The site will be detrimental to our borough and I ask all councillors for their support,” he added.
DUP Colr. George Robinson said to think the site could become permanent was unimaginable and said the nauseating stench could be experienced in Limavady town centre and further afield while DUP Colr. James McCorkell said there were environmental, health and traffic safety concerns.
Sinn Fein’s Cathal McLaughlin said his party full supported, unequivocally, the motion and hope that it can be put to bed. He said Limavady is a beautiful, scenic area, adding: “we don’t want this in our area.”
SDLP Colr. Gerry Mullan said he was very happy to support the motion and said standing at his back doors some days, depending on which way the wind blows: I have never smelled anything in my life as appalling as this.”
He said such a site would do nothing for tourism in the area.
Jack Rankin of the Ulster Unioist Party said he and fellow councillor Edwin Stevenson totally object to it.
TUV Colr. Boyd Douglas cautioned council and said the applicant had a right to have their case heard and given reasonable consideration.
“I just have that concern that we have jumped the gun,” he said. “I think it’s premature and we need to be very careful what we are doing at this stage.”
SDLP Colr. Michael Coyle said objectors had every right to have their say just the same as applicants.
“People are worried and we don’t know the environmental hazards. I think we should support this.”
Sinn Fein’s Brenda Chivers, said she fully supported it and said she felt very sorry for those who had to put up with the stench. She said she experienced the smell in recent times when a farmer carted it past her home daily “and it was sickening,” she said. “They have no consideration for their neighbours.”
It was revealed at the meeting that the issue may feature in an upcoming television programme.
