A Derry MLA has described online comments made by controversial comedian Frankie Boyle about Derry’s ‘Big Brother’ star Conor McIntyre as “highly inappropriate”.

Boyle wrote on social media website Twitter:“Surely Derry people from both sides of the religious divide would like to see punishment beatings brought back for this ***t.”

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan, a friend of the Derry man who escaped eviction from the reality TV show last Friday night, said that while his comments were highly inappropriate, people should not take anything he says too seriously.

“His comments display a real lack of understanding about the seriousness of punishment beatings and the impact that they can have on families here,” Mr Durkan said.

“However, I am not going to make a big song and dance about this and jump around the place with outrage. I wouldn’t take what he says too seriously. He is allegedly a comedian and social commentator and he goes out of his way to shock.

“While I don’t agree with his comments, I don’t think it would be a very good idea to be totally outraged – that would be giving Frankie Boyle exactly what he wants.”

Meanwhile, Derry’s latest reality TV star Conor avoided an early exit from the ‘Big Brother’ house on Friday night when he made it through the eviction show without being voted out.

His family had appealed for the people of Derry to support him.
