Concern at fights organised online
A Derry councillor has spoken of her concerns over the growing number of young people taking part in fights organised online.
Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion says in recent weeks fights have taken place in the Galliagh area of the city after being orchestrated on social networking sites.
She says the fights have involved both boys and girls.
“This is a very worrying development. There seems to have been an increase of organised fights with groups of young people via social networking sites such as Facebook.
“In recent weeks there have been organised fights which have attracted hundreds of young people into the Galliagh area. Several of these fights have been organised at the one location.
“Both boys and girls have been involved.
“On a number of occasions residents have stepped in to try and break up the fights. This brings its own dangers with large groups of people out on the streets.”
Cllr McLaughlin says police need “to put a special focus on what has been happening here before it spirals out of control”
She says there is also an onus on parents to know what their children are getting involved in.
