Concern at Meadowbank Ave. closure

Meadowbank Avenue will be closed on Thursday and Friday of this week to allow for road resurfacing to take place.

Local residents have been advised that the road will be closed from 8 a.m. and that no cars can be parked on the street for the duration of the day.

Mark H Durkan whose office is based near Meadowbank near Long’s Supermarket said:

“While there is little doubt that Meadowbank Avenue needs resurfacing and it is good that Roads Service have acknowledged that, we have some concerns about the inconvenience that will inevitably be caused as the work is carried out.

“Meadowbank has become an extremely busy street as its residents are all too aware and I feel the impact of its closure will be seen in neighbouring streets and could result in traffic chaos.

“I am concerned that traffic coming to Supervalu, the Post Office and neighbouring businesses, including the SDLP constituency office, will have to enter from the Strand Road via the back gate.

“The condition of the roadway there is so bad it really has to be seen to be believed and I have been trying to get it fixed through collaboration with local businesses.

“Roads Service have undertaken to fix the roadway ‘temporarily’ for the duration of the closure but I still worry about that route’s capacity to deal with the volume of traffic that uses this complex on a daily basis.”
