Concerns over Racecourse Road

Traffic management at a busy junction on the Racecourse Road needs to be urgently reviewed, a Shantallow councillor has said.

Sinn Féin colr. Tony Hassan made the call after witnessing a minor collision at the junction, close to the shops at the Shantallow House, last week.

“There have been a number of accidents at this junction since the road service took away the lay-bay a few years back. This week I witnessed another accident taking place as a car was exiting the shopping area. Fortunately the accident was minor but it had the potential to be more serious. This is not the first accident that has happened at this exit and it certainly will not be the last unless Roads Service takes urgent action,” he said.

Colr. Hassan called on Roads Service to introduce changes in the area.

“The exit from this parking area has been a concern of mine since DRD Road Service decided to move the old parking arrangements to the other side of the road. At the time they brought in the new arrangements I complained and strongly objected on the grounds of safety as I was of the opinion that it opened up the area to accidents and made the area dangerous for motorists.

“My appeal was rejected at the time, I believe that decision was wrong and I would once again call on them to urgently review the current system with the view of carrying out the necessary work or erecting proper signage to ensure that these kinds of accidents are prevented in the future,” he said.
