Convoy hit by double tragedy
A seven year old boy lost his battle for life at Letterkenny General Hospital on Saturday afternoon after being hit by a van in Convoy on Friday evening.
Dylan Minnock of Ard Muileann, Milltown Road was struck around 5pm not far from his home. It is understood he was treated at the scene by an off duty nurse and taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where his condition was yesterday morning described as 'critical and serious'.
A 1st class student at the local St Brigid's National School, he was a very popular local lad. His uncle is former Finn Harps player Jonathan Minnock and grandson of another Harps legend, John Minnock. It is understood he died between 5pm and 6pm.
Tragedy struck a second family in the locality a short time later on Friday evening when 80 year old James Strain, Corradooey, died following an accident outside Drumkeen. It is understood the van he was driving went off the road near the junction at a former Letterkenny Four x Four garage at Augheygult on the Stranorlar to Letterkenny road around 6.45pm. He was taken by ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The scene of the accident was preserved and a forensic examination was carried out. Gardai sealed off one lane of the road and traffic restrictions remained in place for a while. The late Mr Strain was removed from the hospital yesterday afternoon. His funeral will take place from the family residence tomorrow, Monday afternoon at 2pm for service in St Ninian’s Parish Church with burial afterwards in the family plot.
