Cops seize illegal cigs

Illegal cigarettes with an estimated value of around £8000 have been seized from a mobile shop in Derry.

Police say they made the seizure from a shop in Carnhill yesterday (September 25).

PSNI Neighbourhood Sergeant Joe George said, “These cigarettes – which are sold cheaply – represent a financial loss to law-abiding retailers, who sell cigarettes legally.

“We have also received reports that cigarettes are being sold to young people which pose risks to their health. I urge anyone with information to contact their local Neighbourhood Officer or report it to Police at Strand Road station on 0845 600 8000.”

The illegal cigarettes are estimated to be worth £8,000 and have been passed to HM Revenue and Customs for investigation.
