Council demand answers from PSNI over raid on Mayor’s home
The Chief Executive and Town Clerk of Derry City Council has been instructed by councillors to ask the P.S.N.I. Commander in Derry why the Mayor of Derry’s home was raided by police in the early hours of Friday morning.
The motion, which requests Town Clark, Sharon O’Connor, to write to P.S.N.I. area commander for Derry, Chief Superintendent, Stephen Martin, was tabled by Sinn Fein councillor Barney O’Hagan at a policy and resources meeting on Friday afternoon.
The motion was seconded by the S.D.L.P.
“We think that it’s important that council demand a full explanation as to why the home of our democratically elected mayor was raided in such a fashion by the P.S.N.I.,” Colr. O’Hagan said.
“I would expect the letter to be composed in the next few days and hopefully we will have an update at next Thursday’s council meeting,” he said.
Sinn Fein Councillor and Mayor of Derry, Kevin Campbell’s home was raided and P.S.N.I. officers confiscated mobile phones, personal computers and cameras.
“It was a traumatic experience for my wife and my ten year-old daughter,” said Colr. Campbell
He added: “The experience left my daughter in tears and very upset but thanks to the help of kind neighbours she was spared the full impact of this unexplained raid on our home.”
