Culmore PO robbed

Staff the Post Office in Culmore were held at gunpoint during an armed robbery yesterday morning.

At 10.15am yesterday two men hijacked a silver Volkswagon Passat in the Sandbank Cottages area and drove it to the Post Office where they held the staff - including a pregnant woman - at gunpoint before robbing the safe and making off with a sum of money.

The car was later found abandoned on the Coney Road in the Culmore Point area. The Coney Road was sealed off as police and British army bomb disposal officers examined the vehicle.

The armed robbery was condemned by local politicians.

SDLP councillor Angela Dobbins, who spoke to the staff, said; “The Postmaster is pretty shaken after being held up at gunpoint, as are shop staff from both Chill and Centra – one of which is heavily pregnant.

“That staff carrying out their daily work were subjected to such a terrifying and unprovoked attack is nothing short of appalling.

“There must be no doubt that the community totally rejects the perpetrators of this callous crime. It is essential that anyone with information about this incident contact the police immediately so that the perpetrators are caught and brought to justice.”

Local Sinn Féin colr. Tony Hassan said; “This must have been a very frightening experience for the owner of the car and members of Post Office staff caught up in this ordeal.

“Whoever carried out this robbery are enemies of our community and must not be allowed to terrorise people attempting to provide a service for the Culmore area.”
