Culture boss promises ‘wonderful’ programme

The company charged with making Derry’s City of Culture year a success has promised that a “wonderful” programme of events is to be unveiled on Thursday.

As speculation continued to mount last night about some big name surprises in the 2013 events list, the City of Culture company remained tight-lipped about the details of the much anticipated programme.

However, Fiona Kane, the company’s marketing and communication chief, last night described the programme as “wonderful”, adding that she expected the people of Derry to be “pleased” with the lineup of events.

She declined to comment of speculation that major international acts are to perform in the city during the City of Culture celebrations.

However, Ms Kane did promise that there would be a couple of “big surprises” in the programme.

One of the big names being tipped to perform in the city next year is American guitarist, singer and composer Ry Cooder, although no confirmation was available last night ahead of Thursday’s big launch.

The main announcement of the programme of events is expected to be made by Culture Company boss Shona McCarthy at noon on Thursday at Ebrington. Ebrington Square is expected to be a hive of activity between noon at 2pm with a carnival atmosphere and live broadcasts by BBC Radio Ulster and Foyle.

In the evening, Mayor Kevin Campbell is to host a civic reception for those involved in the plans for the City of Culture celebration and invited guests.
