The friends of Derry man David Brinkley, who passed away after a battle with cancer, will host a fundraising poker night in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support later this month.

Mr. Brinkley died on April 27 of this year after a two year battle with stomach cancer, he was 25 years old. David’s lifelong friend Ray Barlow told the ‘Journal: “We were moved to organise something for charity in memory of David. He was so strong during his illness that he kept most of what he was going through to himself. We, as anyone who faces this disease, know just how helpful Macmillan were to both David and his family, so we wanted to raise some money for them.”

The boys grew up together on Derry’s Glenbank Road: “We knew each other from when we were two or three years old. Unfortunately I got a job on the Strangford Lough ferry. So I had to move away as David’s illness progressed but the Brinkley family and David’s extended circle of friends are all close. They will all be at the poker night also. I would also like to invite all those who have availed of the services of Macmillan in the past. The evening is open to anyone, even if they just want to play a hand of cards.”

Macmillan provide expert care to cancer patients and their family. The money raised in the poker night will help pay for practical, medical and financial assistance for those families affected by cancer.

To that end Ray has gone door to door trying to secure prizes for the poker night. “It is exhausting but I haven’t had too much success. I suppose times are tight for everyone but this is an opportunity to give some much needed funds to Macmillan. I would like to thank the Bowling Alley, Strand Road Cinema and CEX for their support.

“We really want to make it a big night as the Macmillan nurses were great to David. So all help will be warmly welcomed.”

The poker night will be hosted in the Delacroix on Friday October 12 from 7.30pm. If you can help Ray with spot prizes please phone him on 07541290823.
