Dealers warned

A SHADOWY new group in Derry has issued a chilling warning to drug dealers that they will face 'swift and deadly' action if they persist with their activities the Sunday Journal can reveal.

In a statement to this newspaper the unknown 'Concerned Residents against Drugs' said that they had already taken action 'against two dealers in the Shantallow/Carnhill area' and againt another seven dealers in the Rosemnount area.

The group said that one of those dealers was armed and had threatened a 73-year-old woman and a well known republican. The group added that if this dealer persisted they would take 'swift and deadly action' against him.

The statement continued with a general warning to drug dealers that they too would face action if they did not stop.

They added that anyone involved in this activity should contact them or face the consequences.

Up until now no such group is known to operate in the Derry area. In the late 1990's a group calling itself Direct Action Against Drugs shot several people in Belfast for alleged drug dealing.

Last night police in Derry issued a hard hitting response to the group's statement.

Area Commander for Foyle Chief Inspector Chris Yates said: "A few weeks ago I re-emphasised the need for the community to fully support the police when it comes to tackling the issue of drugs.

"I asked that all information relating to the sale and supply of illegal drugs be passed directly to police or through the Crimestoppers charity. I fully appreciate that this is a priority issue for the residents of Foyle - it is also a priority issue for police. However if we are to be successful then we need to work together and put the drug suppliers and dealers before the courts.

"The suggestion that those allegedly involved in the supply of drugs have been dealt with outside the law is of great concern.

"It is the responsibility of the community to support the police in tackling all forms of crime. It is unacceptable for members of the public to take the law into their own hands. Those who do so may themselves commit offences and be liable for prosecution. Vigilante action will not be tolerated in any form.

"Policing must be left to us and we will provide a professional and accountable service."
