Death of rugby’s ‘perfect role model’

City of Derry Rugby Club and the wider Derry rugby fraternity are “in shock” following the tragic death of young Ulster player, Nevin Spence, his father Noel and brother, Graham in a farming accident on Saturday.

The three family members died after an incident involving a slurry tank on their County Down farm. Their sister, Emma, also received hospital treatment following the tragedy but has since been released.

Nevin was an up and coming star in the Ulster rugby team. That side have now postponed their Pro12 fixture at Italian club Zebre on Friday following the death of the highly respected 22 year old.

A former teammate of Nevin’s, City of Derry player Adam Bratton, who played centre alongside the 22 year old at Ballnahinch two seasons ago described him as “destined for big things. “

“Nevin was a brilliant player, a fantastic rugby player and a perfect role model not simply for younger players but for any rugby player.

“Nevin was what rugby is all about. When I heard the news I was just shocked.”

It was only a few short weeks ago that Nevin Spence and his Ulster team mates travelled to Derry to coach young local players.

Adam said: “It is just devastating, the whole club (City of Derry) are just in shock. Off the pitch Nevin was a gentleman, a real gentleman. His death is a big loss to the sport, not just here or for Ulster, but for Ireland. “
