Debt worker says it's never too late
Carnhill Resource Centre has just appointed a new Money and Debt advice worker.
Aidan McCrea, who has more than five years' experience in the field of insolvency and debt related matters says you should never be afraid to ask for help when dealing with the problems of debt and coping with your credit payments.
"The sooner you act the sooner you can get your life back on course," he said.
"If you're in debt, don't ignore the problem. Tell the people you owe money to if you are having problems paying them back – they will have processes in place to help. Talk to a debt adviser – they will help you tackle your debts as a whole, rather than individually."
He warned that you may have the beginnings of a debt problem if you find yourself doing any of the following: using credit to pay credit bills; being tempted to take out a consolidation loan to reduce monthly payments on servicing your debts; paying no more than the minimum payments due on your credit cards; or using a credit card to take out cash advances.
"Be wary of borrowing more money to pay off existing debts without taking advice first – you could end up making things worse," he said.
"Check your income and see if there is anything else you're entitled to, such as benefits or tax credits.
"Budget for expected expenses such as birthdays and Christmas presents.
"Try and save something each month towards them. Look at your budget each time there's a change that affects your money situation."
For free, confidential and independent debt and benefits advice you can contact Aidan at The Resource Centre, Carnhill Derry on 7135 2832 or e-mail aidanmccrea@googlemail.com
