Derry actor in new Channel 4 comedy

Derry actor Peter Mitchell is back on TV screens in a brand new Channel 4 comedy.

‘I’m Spazticus’ is a six-part comedy produced by Channel 4 to accompany the Paralympics. An award-winning pilot of the show was first broadcast as part of Channel 4’s Comedy Lab in 2005.

It features disabled performers pranking able-bodied members of the public.

A mix of hidden camera show and mock doc, with a studio-based element, the show features a number of recurring characters as well as one-offs. I’m Spazticus aims to be a fresh, cheeky, irreverent take on the prank show.

The National Disability Arts Forum said: “And if disabled people are seen to be doing TV with panache and flair this has got to be an improvement on the usual investigative 55 minutes of misery that is offered up as our lives.”

Producer Jamie O’Leary said: “Whilst this is far from revenge TV, we hope it is both barrier and ground-breaking - it will never be worthy and box-ticking but hopefully funny.”

Former Leeds United footballer and Limavady native, Peter Mitchell (27), played at Leeds United before tragedy ended his football career.

The County Derry man, who now lives in the Waterside area, was paralysed after a car crash in Leeds in 2002 when he was 18 years-old.

Peter, who is paraplegic, a played roles in Channel 4 show Cast-offs, Hollyoaks and Doctors.

The first instalment of ‘I’m Spazticus’ will be televised tonight on Channel 4 at 10.10pm.
