Derry chef named Ireland’s best

Newly crowned Irish Chef of the Year plans to bring his award winning fayre into Derry city centre.

Ian Orr of Browns Restaurant was named Irish Chef of the Year at the 2013 Georgina Campbell Awards at a prize giving in Dublin on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ Ian says the accolade is a real honour and paid tribute to the team at Browns.

“We went to Dublin not expecting to win.

“It’s an absolute honour to be named chef of the year. But you are only as good as the team you have working with you, and thankfully we have a great team at Browns.”

Ian, who has previously worked at London’s River Cafe and Rathmullan House, joins a illustrious list of chefs to be named Ireland’s finest at the Georgina Campbell Awards, including Richard Corrigan, Stefan Matz and Paul Flynn.

Ian was lauded for “a deft hand and a light touch, allowing the natural flavour, texture and colour of ultra-fresh ingredients to take the lead.”

The Georgina Campbell website continues: “And this chef’s enthusiasm for the wonderful local produce coming into his kitchen can sometimes lead to unexpected acts of generosity – it has been known, for example, for the arrival of beautiful fresh crab to inspire an amuse bouche of a little warm crab salad for the delighted guests.

“This is undoubtedly some of the finest cooking in the land, and visitors to Derry should ensure that at least one meal here is firmly fixed in their itinerary.”

And next on the horizon for Ian and the team are expansion plans - the city’s foodies can look forward to Browns in Town opening in the coming months.

It was a double celebration for the north west at Tuesday’s awards with Buncrana’s beach House Bar and restaurant being named Casual Dining Restaurant of the Year.
