Derry City Council support for gay marriage

Derry City Council has become the latest local authority in the north to support the introduction of same-sex marriages.

Councillors backed the motion at a meeting yesterday and follows the decision made by councillors in Belfast to pass the same motion.

Sinn Féin Councillor Lynn Fleming who proposed the motion said:“I am delighted that Derry City Council supported the Sinn Féin motion on same-sex marriage.

“I believe the majority of public opinion across the country is supportive of moving from civil partnerships to civil marriages for same-sex couples with all the extra rights and benefits that would entail.

“I’m sure that approval of this motion will be a great boost for the gay and lesbian community in Derry and across the country in the on-going struggle for recognition from wider society and equality in all aspects of life.”

“We are bringing these motions forward because this is a human rights and equality issue. LGBT couples should have the same rights as any other citizen on this island. It is a positive step forward that so many councils have already shown their support for marriage equality and hopefully many more will follow.”
