Derry dissidents at murdered Dublin Real IRA man’s funeral

A number of prominent dissident republicans from Derry were among the hundreds of mourners who attended the funeral of a Real IRA member shot dead in Dublin last week.

31 year-old Alan Ryan, who had strong links to Derry and lived in the city for a time, was shot dead in north Dublin last week. Graffiti paying tribute to the dead man appeared on walls in the Bogside and Top of the Hill areas in recent days.

He was buried with full republican honours on Saturday morning and a crowd of 500 mourners attended his funeral.

A volley of shots was fired over his coffin, which was draped with a Tricolour, and the funeral cortege was accompanied by a colour party of masked men and women dressed in paramilitary uniforms.

Prominent Derry republican Gary Donnelly was among the mourners at the funeral and it is believed that a number of other senior dissident republicans from Derry were also in attendance.

Dissident republicans from Derry have rejected claims that the dead man was involved in any criminal activity and described him as a committed republican who was involved in tackling drug gangs in Dublin.

Mr Ryan lived in the Brandywell area of Derry for a time after he was released from Portlaoise prison.

It has been claimed that Dublin drug gangs may have hired a professional assassin to kill the 31 year-old.
