Derry in world’s top four cities to visit

Derry is the fourth best city to visit in the world according to Lonely Planet.

The 2013 edition of the world renowned globetrotters’ bible lists the City of Culture along with the tourism hotspots of San Francisco, Amsterdam, Hyderabad and Beijing in the world top five cities to visit.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2013 publication states: “This vibrant, historic, walled city is undergoing a renaissance”.

Derry’s selection was based on its 2013 calendar of culture events, as the city prepares to celebrate the 400th anniversary of its famous Walls and host the prestigious Turner Prize.

Lonely Planet’s Tom Hall said the ‘Best in Travel’ publication is all about identifying destinations which offer the traveller something special. “Derry is brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exiting arts and music scene.”

Despite referring to the city’s famous waterway as the ‘River Doyle’, the Lonely Planet accolade has been welcomed as a major international coup for the city.

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan said: “This news, coming as it does from one of the world’s most highly-respected travel publishers, is international affirmation of what we all knew to be true: that Derry has a wealth of things to offer the global tourist market.

“Whether it’s the forthcoming City of Culture year, our rich history, our status as a city in the vanguard of promoting peace or just the rich diversity of our cultural, social and business scenes, Derry is right on the world map.

“This announcement is testimony to the hard work and dedication of all those who work to promote Derry to the world. “We look forward to the boost this will bring our city.

Martin McCrossan, of Derry City Tours, said the news was “fantastic”.

“We always knew we were a must see destination and to get this recognition in a global publication is fitting.

“Derry has had its difficulties in the past but its future is very exiting with the City of Culture next year and the All-Ireland Fleadh and It’s great to see the city recognised for all the right reasons.”
