Derry Journal-Foyle Civic Trust Favourite Building Awards

Architects, artists, school principals, and developers congregated at the Guildhall earlier this week for the prize-giving ceremony of the Derry Journal-Foyle Civic Trust Favourite Building Awards 2008.

Derry's outgoing Mayor Gerard Diver presented each winner with their well-earned Favourite Building Awards certificates. Mayor Diver praised all those who won an award as well as all those who were initially nominated by the public. He also commended the Foyle Civic Trust and, in particular, Honorary Secretary Colm Cavenagh, for creating the innovative awards.

The awards celebrated the very best of the city's built environment. The nomination and voting process spanned several months and saw local people voting in their thousands for the region's most popular buildings, open spaces, restorations and artworks.

The outstanding winner of the day was local artist Kieran O'Doherty whose wood sculpture 'An Taoiseach Feasa' at St. Paul's Primary School won both the Favourite Public Artwork category and - with the public having voted in their thousands - also the Overall Winner of the Favourite Building Awards 2008.

Strabane's stunning new Holy Cross College was voted Favourite Public Building 2008, while Bayview Gardens in the Waterside was voted Favourite Residential Development.

Bready's Sollus Ulster Scots Cultural Centre won Favourite Commercial Building, while the new opticians at 34 Waterloo Street easily scooped the title of Favourite Restored Building.

The sleek new public walkway linking the city centre's Richmond Centre to Foyleside Shopping Centre was also awarded first place in the Favourite Open Space category, while Martin Heron's bronze sculpture 'Where Dreams Go' - better known as Ambrose the Pig - at the Alley Theatre in Strabane received a special commendation from judges for being so popular with the voting public during the first round of nominations. Well done to all our winners and all those nominated in this prestigious competition.
