Graffiti has appeared in a number of areas in Derry paying tribute to a dissident republican who was shot dead in Dublin this week.

Alan Ryan, a prominent Real IRA member with links to organised crime, was shot dead in Dublin on Monday.

Slogans paying tribute to the dead man have appeared on walls in the Bogside and Top of the Hill areas.

A statement also appeared on the Derry website of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement condemning the killing. “The 32 County Sovereignty Movement wishes to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Ryan family following the cowardly murder of our friend, comrade and activist Alan Ryan. Alan was shot in the back in cold blood on the streets where he grew up, streets where he had worked tirelessly to tackle the scourge of drugs which he had always opposed with every fibre of his being. We cannot express in words the pain now felt by both the movement as a whole and individual activists now that he has been taken from us.

Meanwhile, relatives of Derry man Kieran Doherty, who was shot dead by the Real IRA two years ago, have claimed that Alan Ryan knew who was responsible for the shooting. Mr Doherty, a senior member of the Real IRA, was shot dead by the group after they claimed he was involved in the drugs trade, a claim his family have consistently denied.

Garda sources have claimed that Ryan was will known in criminal circles in the capital.
