Derry man gigs at Harry Potter party
A Derry man who is the lead singer of the UK's number one Oasis tribute ban has played at an exclusive gig for the cast of Harry Potter.
By day Daniel McColgan, who is originally from the Strabane Old Road, works in a nursing home for the elderly. But at night he slips on his dark glasses, flattens down his hair and becomes Liam Gallagher.
And he’s now mixing with celebrities including Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.
Playing on stage is a dream come true for the 27 years-old who began singing when he was 14.
His mum Meta explained: “Daniel taught himself how to sing, play guitar and keyboard. He got through on ‘You’re a Star’ twice. Since then he’s been entering karaokes and competitions. Daniel always said he wanted to be in a band.”
Four years ago Daniel upped sticks and moved to Leicestershire where he works in a nursing home. In between work he found jobs singing solo numbers in pubs, weddings and birthday parties.
However it was while he was on a internet site for Oasis tribute bands he seized his chance.
“Daniel posted that if they ever needed a singer he was their man,” explained Meta. “Then he got a call from the band ‘Noasis’ who invited him for an audition. He hasn’t looked back. They’ve travelled the length and breadth of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland performing.”
Meta revealed how several weeks ago the band was invited to play at a private party.
“Daniel rang me up telling me I would never believe who was with him,” she said.
“He was performing for the Harry Potter cast, one of them had a birthday. He said it was amazing, but that’s Daniel, he just loves to be on stage performing. He has got loads of gigs lined up for this summer.”
Meta, who has kept a scrapbook of her youngest son’s success including pictures and posters says she can’t wait until Daniel gets the chance to bring the band to Derry.
“He really is brilliant,” she said. “They sound so much like Oasis. I’d love to see him playing in Derry.”
