A Derry resident has had first-hand experience of Hurricane Sandy on a trip to the United States this week.

Jamie Kearney, 45, who has recently moved to Derry from Liverpool, was in New York visiting relatives. Arriving shortly before the hurricane approached land, Jamie saw the city shut down and prepare for the storm to hit.

Luckily for Jamie, he was staying in Brooklyn Heights, close to the worst-hit areas, but at too high a point for the waters to reach, whereas streets no more than a hundred yards away were evacuated as a safety precaution.

Speaking after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, Jamie said, “The winds were louder than I’ve ever heard before. They were battering the house, and the rain was lashing down. It felt like a ghost town, and you dared not go out. They say New York never sleeps, but this time the city had no choice.”

The following morning, going out to examine the results, he described a scene of damaged cars and houses, and bent and broken trees. “I’ve been to New York many times,” he said, “but this is a trip like no other.”

Jamie is hoping conditions will abate to allow his airline flight to go ahead as scheduled at the weekend.
