Derry’s Mayor has welcomed a PSNI apology following a raid on his house last month.

Sinn Fein’s Kevin Campbell says the PSNI have made an “unreserved and unconditional apology in regards to the raid on his home in July.”

“Following a number of meetings between Sinn Féin representatives and the PSNI, my wife and myself today received the apology requested from District Commander, Chief Superintendent, Stephen Martin and Assistant Chief Constable, Dave Jones.”

ACC Jones and District Commander, Chief Superintendent Martin, confirmed it was a mistake to search the Mayor’s home which was wrongly identified during the police operation.

ACC Jones said “We made a mistake and we are deeply sorry for the distress caused to Councillor Campbell and his family which we recognise was personally traumatic and also embarrassing in his role as First Citizen.

“We fully accept the Mayor was not involved in the matters we were investigating that evening. On behalf of the Chief Constable, I unequivocally apologise for what took place at the Mayor’s home on the 12th July. We are grateful for the grace and dignity with which the Mayor and his wife received our apology.

“We also apologise for the length of time it has taken us to be in a position to issue this apology. We understand that it is important that Police are properly held to account and for that reason we have decided to refer the matter to the Police Ombudsman’s Office for independent investigation.”

Colr. Campbell’s home in the Creggan area of Derry was raided by police on July 12 during what the PSNI described as a “major search operation” carried out in the area against vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD).
