People living in Derry’s Currynierin estate are being terrorised by anti-social behaviour involving children as young as nine, it has been claimed.

A resident of the Waterside estate says the area has been plagued by anti-community behaviour for a number of years.

In the latest incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, the resident says a gang of children - some only nine or ten years of age - ripped a lamppost from the ground - despite adults trying to intervene.

The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous says anyone who speaks out faces reprisals.

“People who have spoke out before have had their windows smashed, back doors kicked in, or eggs thrown all over the house. You try and talk to the parents but they don’t care, they don’t want to know,” the resident says.

“They pulled this lamppost right out of the ground, there was a big gang of them, only children, but they would not stop until they had destroyed it.”

The resident says Currynierin has become Derry’s forgotten estate.
