Derry's railway line 'most beautiful in the world'

The railway line between Derry and Coleraine has been described as "one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world" by Monty Python actor, Michael Palin.

The funny-man turned travel writer's comments are being used by Translink to launch a new travel guide to encourage local people to visit our spectacular coastline.

Louise Scott, Translink brand manager, said the train journey and local bus connections were an excellent platform to enjoy the unique landscape and local attractions.

She said: "We have worked together with local councils, Derry Visitor & Convention Bureau, the National Trust, Derry's White Horse Hotel, iLex and Causeway Coast and Glens Tourism to showcase this area.

"Whether it's a couple's retreat, an excursion with friends or a family day trip, this new travel guide sets out just how much there is to see and do in this beautiful region of Northern Ireland: from the vibrant walled City of Derry to the peaceful golden sands of Benone Strand; the impressive Binevenagh Mountain and cliffs at Downhill featuring Ireland's longest railway tunnels to the charm of old and new found side by side in Coleraine."

The journey enables passengers to relax while taking in beautiful views of the coast, particularly the Foyle estuary stretching from Greencastle in Co. Donegal, a well-known hotspot for wildlife. Passing the gorgeous Benone Strand, the track runs alongside the sand so you have spectacular views of one of Ireland's most unspoilt beaches.

Louise Scott added: "The attractive new guide provides tourism information on the area along with train and bus information including discounted ticket options. We hope that both visitors to Northern Ireland and those looking for a fun 'staycation' will make this exciting journey to explore the North Coast and the City of Derry and enjoy a memorable day out."

The new Translink publication, 'One of the World's Great Railway Journeys', is now available in local bus and train stations. For more information visit www.translink.co.uk or call 02890666630.
