Derry still among lowest recycling rates
The amount of Derry household waste sent for recycling is still among the lowest of all the north’s local authorities, according to the latest figures.
New figures contained in the Northern Ireland Municipal Waste Management Report covering April- June of this year reveal that almost 14,000 tonnes of household waste was gathered by Derry City Council - and just 27% of all waste was sent for recycling.
Only Belfast City Council recycles less than Derry.
Government targets set out within the Northern Ireland Waste Management Strategy dictate that 40% of waste should be recycled by 2015, and by 2020 local authorities should be recycling 60% of all waste.
Across the north, the amount of waste landfilled fell by almost 3% in the second quarter of 2012.
Environment Minister Alex Attwood says the drop “can send out the message that this part of the world has great clean credentials and that we should aim to be a world leader in carbon reduction.”
Antrim, Larne, Limavady, Magherafelt and Banbridge councils all recycle more than 50% of waste.
Despite the current figures placing Derry at the bottom of the recycling table, there has been a massive increase in waste recycling in the city over the last decade.
Just ten years ago, in 2002, only 2.3% of waste from the city was sent for recycling.
